August 2025 Update

It may be time for another update from moi. I recently found out that I'm now eligible to get liver directed chemotherapy from an implanted device called a hepatic artery infusion pump (HAI pump). This delivers chemo at 400% higher dosage than traditional system chemo. In some cases it can be curative. CURATIVE. I can hope. In many cases, it improves your odds for survival by a few years or more.

I was not eligible for this in the beginning of treatment, but I've had good results from chemo so far, so they're going to put one in. This was suggested by my liver transplant surgeon so that I could get my cancer tumor markers low enough for transplant (they're currently too high). I also get to have some of my colon removed to get rid of my primary colon tumor, as well as some of my liver removed (to get rid of tumors on the left side). If the HAI pump is very effective, it will shrink the tumors on the right side of my liver so I can get those surgically removed as well. If it doesn't shrink them enough, I'll continue to pursue a liver transplant.

This is going to be a massive surgery and I'm going to spend about a week in the hospital. I'll be spending lots of time in Portland at OHSU for the surgery and over the next year, as my primary care will be switched there. So look out Portland friends - I'd love to see you.
